Camp Siongco, Awang, DOS, Maguindanao - 6th Infantry (KAMPILAN) Division Commander Brigadier General Edmundo R Pangilinan joins the Indigenous People of Central Mindanao and the entire world in celebration of the World Indigenous Peoples (IP) Day. It can be recalled that the International Day of the World's Indigenous People (9 August) was first proclaimed by the General Assembly in December 1994, to be celebrated every year during the first International Decade of the World's Indigenous People (1995 – 2004). In 2004, the Assembly proclaimed a Second International Decade, from 2005 – 2014, with the theme of "A Decade for Action and Dignity." The focus of this year's International Day is "Bridging the gap: implementing the rights of indigenous peoples". As it is said, the theme aims to highlight the importance of implementing the rights of indigenous peoples. BGen Pangilinan said that the theme suits the present peace agreement in Central Mindanao. “We will support and make sure that all minorities and tribes are given due respect, recognition and most especially the rights to practice freely their distinctive cultures”, he added. “We assure the people of Central Mindanao no matter what denomination they belong, the Kampilan troopers shall continue to serve, protect their rights and preserve their dignity as a person”, he concluded.
